AI Photoshop free options: choose a task and check the limits

Looking for “AI Photoshop free”? Adobe Firefly offers limited free daily generations; local Krita AI Diffusion offers a different route using your own hardware. Neither gives you an unrestricted free Photoshop desktop subscription. Choose the edit you need before choosing a service.

Choose the AI editing task before the free plan

An AI image editor can mean filling a selected area, extending a photograph, replacing a background or inventing a whole scene. Those jobs need different controls. A text-to-image generator may produce an attractive picture without preserving the exact product, face, lettering or layout in your original.

Your intended editRoute to investigateWhat makes the result usable
Remove an object and fill its surroundingsFirefly generative editing, or selection-based inpainting in the Krita plugin. The untouched area stays intact; edges, shadows and repeated textures remain plausible.
Extend an image for a wider cropA generative expand/outpainting workflow. The original subject and horizon remain consistent, and the exported dimensions fit the placement.
Build an image from guided compositionArtCraft AI Studio’s canvas and scene workflow. The selected model follows the reference and composition at an acceptable per-generation cost.
Crop, resize or add accurate textAn ordinary image editor may be sufficient.Exact dimensions, spelling and export quality matter more than generating new pixels.

Firefly’s overview describes prompt-based generation and editing. The independent Krita AI Diffusion plugin documents selection-based filling and canvas expansion. ArtCraft documents canvas and scene guidance. These are documented routes to investigate; we have not run a quality comparison between them.

For ordinary editing, start with our Photoshop alternative selection guide. Our browser image editor performs basic adjustments, cropping and text locally; it has no AI generation and no PSD support.

AI Photoshop free access: daily limits and local costs

Checked on 2026-10-14: Adobe’s current FAQ describes a limited number of free daily generations on a curated selection of models. The limits refresh daily; the number, models and features may change. It does not publish a universal free allowance that we can responsibly turn into “25 images every month” or “unlimited AI.” Sign in and check the allowance for your selected feature.

RouteWhat “free” means hereBoundary to check before starting
Adobe Firefly free accessLimited daily generations; broader access is sold through paid plans.Your account’s available models, remaining generations and access to the editing operation. A Firefly entitlement is not a blanket Photoshop desktop license.
Krita AI Diffusion, local backendThe project provides an open, local generation route using your hardware.Krita, the plugin, backend and model files must work together. Hardware, storage, electricity and setup time remain real costs.
ArtCraft AI Studio plansOpen-source Studio code does not establish free model-service use.The checked pricing page sells monthly credits. Basic lists 1,000 credits per month; model and resolution affect how many outputs that buys.

Choose the local Krita route if avoiding a hosted generation allowance is a requirement and your computer can run the backend. Choosing its online service or a remote custom server changes both the payment and processing arrangement. The plugin’s installation guide distinguishes those options explicitly.

A free daily balance can be enough for an occasional edit, yet fail a batch job after several rejected candidates. Count attempts, not just final images. Keep a manual editing route for a deadline rather than assuming a free allowance will cover unlimited retries. For non-AI costs and Adobe trial conditions, use the free editing guide.

A local generative-fill route with the Krita plugin

Krita AI Diffusion is a third-party plugin, not a generative feature included automatically with every Krita installation. Its documentation separates installing the plugin from installing or connecting to the generation backend. Downloading only the plugin ZIP does not supply all the models needed to generate.

  1. Match the application and plugin. Follow the current installation guide for the correct Krita and plugin release pairing.
  2. Choose Local Managed Server. This installs the backend on your own computer; an online or remote option is a different route.
  3. Check resources before downloading models. The guide asks for a capable GPU and substantial disk space. CPU execution is described as slow.
  4. Start with a small duplicate image. Make a selection around a replaceable detail and inspect one result before expanding the workload.

This is an installation route, not a completed setup test by this website. We have not measured its speed, memory use or generation quality on a supported GPU. Model files also have their own terms; an open-source plugin license does not settle every downloaded model’s permitted use.

If you only need a clean crop or an exact line of text, a local AI installation may add work without improving the deliverable. The open-source editing guide covers the broader licensing choice without treating AI as a requirement.

Where are your images processed?

A desktop window does not establish local inference. A local editor can send a selected region, reference image and prompt to a model service. Decide whether remote processing is acceptable before choosing a cloud model, rather than after uploading a client original.

WorkflowProcessing evidenceWhat the evidence does not establish
Adobe Firefly web workflowAn Adobe account and hosted generative service. Adobe states that customer content is not used to train its generative AI models.A no-training commitment does not mean the image remains on your computer or is never processed by a service.
Krita plugin with Local Managed ServerThe documented backend runs on your machine after installation. The same privacy conclusion does not apply if you switch to Online Service or a remote custom server.
ArtCraft AI Studio with a provider modelThe Studio README lists separate model-provider integrations.Open-source source code and local composition do not establish that every model runs locally. Confirm the chosen provider’s handling and terms.

Our ArtCraft AI guide helps separate Studio access from PhotoCraft and the other Crafting Apps. We have not completed a provider-by-provider retention audit and do not assert a shared deletion period across those services. For a confidential assignment, use a permitted sample until you have checked the actual service and your client’s requirements.

Free exports, watermarks and editable results

Generation access is only one condition. Check the downloaded file’s pixel dimensions, format, visible marks and any layered-editing requirement. A preview that looks clean in the service can still be unsuitable for a full-resolution product listing or an editable handoff.

Adobe’s product description states that qualifying Firefly exports receive C2PA metadata. Provenance metadata and a visible logo across the picture are different properties. This guide has not downloaded fresh outputs from these services, so we do not promise a particular free export resolution or a universal watermark-free result.

  • Check the file, not the preview: open the actual download and read its dimensions.
  • Inspect the changed region: look for altered lettering, duplicated objects, halos and inconsistent shadows.
  • Keep editing structure: retain the original, selection and working document if a later revision is likely.
  • Confirm the recipient’s requirement: a flattened generated PNG is not proof of editable PSD compatibility.

Use our separate PSD evidence and compatibility guide — Desktop walkthrough for layered file exchange. Its existing PhotoCraft samples do not validate an AI service’s output or Photoshop’s generative layers.

A product-background example and what remains untested

Example brief, not a generated result: you need a 1600 × 1200 product image with extra space on the right for a caption. The product’s label and silhouette must remain unchanged. First try a wider canvas and manual background work; use generative expansion only where inventing background pixels is acceptable.

For an AI attempt, work from a permitted copy, select the background extension, and request a simple continuation. Record the model, available free allowance, number of attempts and export size. Reject a candidate that changes the product even if the new backdrop looks attractive. Add the caption with an ordinary text tool so its wording is exact.

What we verified for this guide is the public feature, allowance and backend documentation linked above on 2026-10-14. What remains untested here is generation success, output quality, account-specific limits and downloaded-file properties. There is no fabricated before-and-after image, speed ranking or claim that a named service completed this example.

For a reproducible task already covered on this website, try the transparent PNG workflow — CLI workflow or the first PhotoCraft edit — Desktop walkthrough. Those are separate non-AI exercises with their own evidence.
