Free editing and trials
Free Photoshop: trial conditions and ongoing free editing
For free Photoshop on desktop, Adobe advertises a seven-day trial that converts to a paid plan unless canceled. If you need ongoing free editing, consider GIMP, Krita, Photopea or an experimental PhotoCraft workflow instead. These are different products, with different limits.
The official free Photoshop trial has a billing boundary
Adobe’s trial page, checked on 2026-10-14, describes a seven-day desktop trial, an Adobe account and billing information, followed by a paid membership unless canceled before the trial ends. It is a trial of the full application, rather than a permanently free desktop edition.
Start from Adobe’s official Photoshop trial page if that is what you need. The checkout for your region and selected plan supplies the applicable price, billing term, eligibility and cancellation terms. “Billed monthly” can describe payments on an annual commitment; read the commitment as well as the monthly amount.
Adobe also offers free mobile access with paid features, so a free phone-app listing does not establish that the same desktop features are free. Availability and included functions can vary by platform and plan. This guide has not created a trial subscription or tested a cancellation.
Record these details before starting
- The selected product, region and account.
- The trial end date shown at checkout and the time zone if provided.
- The recurring amount, taxes and commitment after the trial.
- Whether an extra product such as Adobe Stock is selected.
- The cancellation route and the confirmation you should retain.
To avoid starting a paid period, complete cancellation through the account’s plan controls before the trial ends and keep its confirmation. Follow Adobe’s current instructions if a plan cannot be canceled from the account. Removing the application from your computer is not the plan-cancellation step.

Ongoing free editing: what each route actually offers
If you need to edit again next week without a trial countdown, choose a tool whose normal editing route is free. This table covers basic access and saving conditions documented by the projects; it is not a complete list of every optional service or a tested ranking.
| Route | Free access and account boundary | Saving and costs to notice |
|---|---|---|
| GIMP desktop | Official downloads are available without an editor subscription or mandatory editing account. | Keep an XCF working project and export the delivery image. Third-party services or assets are separate. |
| Krita desktop | Direct downloads are free; the project also sells optional store builds. | Save your working artwork separately from delivery images. Paying for a store build is a distribution choice. |
| Photopea browser | The project provides a free, advertising-supported editor. Login is used for synced settings and is necessary for Premium. | PSD is its working format; image exports are available. Optional Premium removes advertising and may add benefits. |
| PhotoCraft desktop | Official release navigation leads to the open-source image editor. | An early-alpha experiment, not a verified substitute for every paid Photoshop task. Use copies and inspect results. |
| This site’s basic browser tool | Open the independent image editor without an account | Crop, adjust, add text and export supported image formats. It has no PSD editing or AI generation. |
Photopea’s terms allow using the free editor for work, including commercial work, and explain that buying Premium is optional. Its account documentation distinguishes free access from the paid account’s benefits. Check a particular extra feature’s current conditions before assuming it is included in ordinary editing.

Choose a free route from the reason you came here
You only need a resized image or a caption
Start with the small browser tool if its listed functions cover the result. Work with a copy, set the intended output and export it. An account or a trial is unnecessary for this limited route. For PSD layers or a substantial composition, choose a fuller editor instead of rebuilding the project in a crop utility.
You want a repeatable desktop photo workflow
Investigate GIMP for retouching and composition. Before processing a whole collection, finish one representative image and save both the working project and its delivery export. Time spent learning the interface is a real switching cost even when there is no subscription charge.
You mainly draw or paint
Investigate Krita’s painting tools, tablet response and working-file approach. Start with the official direct download if your priority is the free distribution. Its paid store versions are optional ways to obtain and support the project, rather than a prerequisite for the direct desktop download.
You received a PSD and cannot install an editor
Investigate Photopea’s browser route. Save the edited document before closing the tab, and inspect the required layers rather than relying only on the composite preview. If the recipient insists on Photoshop-specific behavior, a free editor’s ability to open the file may be insufficient.

Check the actual export before investing the afternoon
A free access route is only useful if it can deliver your result. Begin with one permitted sample and finish the whole operation, including saving. Make the required dimensions and file type explicit, and open the downloaded result in the place it will be used.
| Your final file | Confirm before doing a large project | Keep for later revisions |
|---|---|---|
| A listing or social image | The exported dimensions, readable text and intended JPG, PNG or WebP format. | The original photo and an editable working file if you need one. |
| A transparent product graphic | Transparency in a format that supports it, with acceptable edges against different backgrounds. | The original masked project as well as the delivery image. |
| An editable PSD for another person | The particular text, masks and other required elements after they reopen it. | The untouched source PSD and a reference preview. |
| An AI-edited image | The actual free allowance, processing location and export restrictions of that AI feature. | Permitted input and the exported result, subject to the provider’s terms. |
The last case is covered in free AI editing options. Ordinary free editing does not imply unlimited AI generation, and a subscription price of zero does not establish a provider’s image-processing policy.

Free editing, open source and free assets are separate questions
A browser editor can offer free access without granting permission to redistribute its application source. An open-source editor can have paid store builds. Neither arrangement changes the rights to a photograph, typeface or template that you obtained elsewhere.
If source inspection, modification or redistribution matters, use the open-source license comparison. If you are choosing chiefly by deliverable and working-file needs, return to the Photoshop alternative selector. Those decisions should not be collapsed into the word “free.”

Check its version and task scope before relying on it for another job. The free availability of the editor is not a promise that every professional workflow is ready.
