Choose a Photoshop alternative by input and output
Decide which of the following descriptions matches the work on your desk. The suggested starting points are based on each project’s documented purpose, rather than a speed ranking or a claim that we ran every application.
| Your input and deliverable | A sensible starting point | The decisive requirement |
|---|---|---|
| JPG or PNG → a resized, captioned image for a listing | This site’s basic browser editor | Final pixel dimensions and the right image export. It has no PSD or AI editing. |
| A photograph → retouched raster artwork with a reusable working file | GIMP | Its editing tools must cover your correction, and the saved project must preserve your revisions. |
| A sketch → a layered digital painting | Krita | Brush behavior, tablet input and an appropriate working format matter more than matching Photoshop menus. |
| An existing PSD → a browser editing session | Photopea | The actual PSD elements and final saved file need to survive the handoff. |
| A small layered image → an experiment with ArtCraft’s editor | PhotoCraft first-edit practice — Desktop walkthrough | Use our published sample and results within their stated version and task limits. |
If your answer is “a PSD that a client must keep editing,” continue to the file-handoff section before committing. If you need one required Photoshop plugin or a particular production action, make that the deciding requirement first; a general feature checklist will not answer it.

A finished image and an editable project need different files
A product image for a website
Suppose you start with a photograph, crop it to a square, add a price label and publish a PNG. The recipient needs the final size, readable text and the intended background. Keeping the original photograph plus a separate editable project lets you revise the price later. A correctly exported PNG can finish this job even when there is no requirement to exchange a PSD.
For this limited task, open the independent browser editor or use an installed editor you already know. The browser tool is a site utility, separate from PhotoCraft. Its availability does not establish that the PhotoCraft desktop application has passed that same workflow.
A painting you will revise for a month
Keep a working file in the editor’s own format alongside delivery images. Krita distinguishes working formats such as KRA from flattened image exports. GIMP uses XCF for its saved project and a separate Export command for delivery formats. Renaming an exported image to a project extension cannot restore editable brushwork or text.
For an ongoing job, first save the working document, close it and reopen it before you spend hours on the next revision. Keep exported previews in a separate folder so they are easy to deliver without confusing them with the original.

Layer editing and PSD handoff: what must remain editable?
A Photoshop alternative may open a document and still interpret one part differently. List the components that matter to your recipient: live text, masks, adjustments, smart objects, layer effects, embedded profiles or links to external content. Check the needed components, rather than accepting a thumbnail as proof of compatibility.
| Requirement | Opening the file can show | The completed handoff must establish |
|---|---|---|
| A title must be revised next week | The words appear in the preview. | The recipient can select and edit the intended text with the required font. |
| A logo must retain a live effect | The shadow or outline looks plausible. | The effect still exists in a usable form after saving and reopening. |
| A placed image must be replaceable | The image is visible. | The recipient can perform the replacement without rebuilding the composition. |
| A mask controls a precise edge | The flattened render looks acceptable. | The mask and its effect remain correct at the working resolution. |
Photopea uses PSD as its main document format. Krita documents PSD loading and saving, along with limitations and alternative exchange formats. Those are useful starting facts; neither means that every client document will survive an arbitrary edit.
Our PhotoCraft PSD record — Desktop walkthrough separates sample provenance, appearance and editability. Read the sample boundaries before applying its result to another file. Our PhotoCraft versus Photoshop guide — Documentation checklist focuses on that specific pair, rather than this wider selection question.

Offline installation and browser editing are different choices
An installed editor is useful when your work needs to remain available independently of a browser session. Start with the official GIMP or Krita downloads if you want those desktop routes. Check operating-system and architecture requirements on the download page; the presence of source code does not mean that a ready-made build exists for every device.
Photopea runs in a browser. Its introduction says the loaded editor can continue working after disconnecting and that ordinary file editing takes place on the device. That is different from saying you can open its website for the first time without a connection, or that an optional cloud or AI feature necessarily has the same processing conditions.
If your organization restricts browser services, extensions, fonts or external resources, confirm the approved workflow before using work material. If you need a cloud AI function, compare that separately in the AI editing guide instead of assuming the basic editor’s behavior applies.

A Photoshop clone can feel familiar without completing the job
“Photoshop clone” is often shorthand for familiar panels, shortcuts or layer concepts. A similar interface can reduce the effort of learning an application, but it does not verify a plugin, a print handoff or the saved representation of a complex layer.
PhotoCraft’s current README describes an early-alpha editor and explicitly says it is not yet a replacement for daily professional Photoshop work. Our existing first-edit exercise — Desktop walkthrough offers a more concrete starting point: permitted practice material, steps and published output. It is useful evidence for that exercise, rather than a review of all the tools listed here.
For a decision today, choose one candidate from the task table, take a duplicate of a representative file, make the one edit you actually need and inspect the delivered output in its destination. Keep your established working tool until the required handoff succeeds. If you only need another tool because PhotoCraft cannot finish your task, our PhotoCraft alternatives page addresses that separate starting point.
