PhotoCraft file formats: choose what to save

Decide whether the next step is editing, sharing or specialised processing. A supported extension alone does not tell you which properties will be preserved.

Keep a working file and a separate export

A working document preserves the elements you intend to revise. An exported image represents a result for viewing or a specific downstream task. Keep the source, project and export under different names.

Choose the actual format in your app’s save or export controls. Renaming a file extension does not convert its contents. Check the official format assessment (opens a new tab) for the current build’s read, write and fidelity limitations.

Match the format to the requirement

Format or familyTypical reason to consider itCheck before delivery
PSD / PSBLayered exchange with a compatible editor.Required layers, editability, effects and recipient support.
PNGA rendered image with transparency or sharp graphic detail.Dimensions, alpha and colour properties.
JPEGA rendered photograph for a destination accepting lossy images.Quality, dimensions and the absence of transparency.
OpenRasterLayered interchange with an application accepting ORA.The exact effects and layer properties retained.
EXR / TGAA specialised imaging, rendering or production pipeline.Recipient specifications and actual write support.

This table describes use cases, not a guarantee that every format option is available or equally faithful in your version.

Check the result in its destination

  1. Save the editable master before producing an output copy.
  2. Choose the required format and deliberate output settings.
  3. Reopen the exact saved or exported file.
  4. Verify dimensions, transparency, colour and any required editable elements.
  5. Inspect it in the receiving application when possible.

For PSD delivery, follow the round-trip checklist. For colour-critical output, use the profile and soft-proofing guide. When a property fails, keep the original and agree on a format that actually meets the requirement.
