Selections

PhotoCraft selections and mask refinement

A selection defines an area for an operation. A mask can preserve that boundary for later changes. Start with a subject whose edges you can inspect clearly.

Choose a selection method for the subject

Work on an image copy and identify whether you need a simple geometric region or an irregular subject edge. Find the selection tools available in your installed build and begin with the simplest method that fits.

The product page describes local selection and masking features. A feature description is not a guarantee of perfect cutouts. If using an automatic subject-selection command, inspect its result before applying an adjustment or removing a background.

Inspect the boundary in context

Check hair, fine branches, holes, transparent material and similarly coloured background areas at a close view. Also examine the whole image at the intended output size, where an over-soft edge or missing detail may look different.

When converting the selection into a mask, retain the source pixels where possible. Test against both light and dark temporary backgrounds to reveal a fringe. Adjust one part of the mask at a time so you can see which change helped.

A selection left active can limit your next edit unexpectedly. Before an unrelated operation, confirm whether a selection is still present and whether the selected target is an image or mask.

Save an editable result and inspect the export

  1. Keep an untouched source image and a working project.
  2. Refine a small difficult region before processing the whole boundary.
  3. Save the mask in an editable format and reopen it.
  4. Export a PNG when transparency is required; a normal JPEG cannot preserve transparency.
  5. View the export separately on a contrasting background.

If refinement fails consistently, prepare a small shareable sample with the app version and exact steps for the official issue tracker (opens a new tab). For soft-edge controls, read the mask density and feathering guide.
