Layers and masks

PhotoCraft PSD layers and masks: a practice workflow

Learn what each layer contributes before changing it. A reference image and a disposable PSD copy make the checks easier to interpret.

Read the layer structure first

Open a duplicate of the PSD and compare its appearance with an image exported by the original application. Inspect names, ordering and groups. Toggle one layer at a time to identify the photo, text and effects in the composition.

Select a title layer and make a small text change on the copy. Check whether the content stays editable. Similar appearance on screen does not establish that the underlying text, vector or embedded content survived unchanged.

Separate image content from mask coverage

A layer mask controls where a layer is visible. Identify the mask thumbnail and confirm it is selected before editing. Check a high-contrast edge and a partially transparent area, because a small overall preview can hide a fringe or abrupt cutoff.

Use a reversible experiment on the practice file, then compare with the unchanged reference. If the whole photograph changes when you meant to change visibility, stop and recheck the selected thumbnail. The mask refinement guide separates coverage, density and edge softness.

Save one change and verify it

  1. Keep the original PSD untouched and name the test copy clearly.
  2. Make one visible edit, such as repositioning the title.
  3. Save under a new name and record warnings.
  4. Reopen the saved file, inspecting both the changed area and unaffected layers.
  5. If another application is the destination, check the saved copy there too.

Check fonts, blending, effects and smart objects before a real handoff. The project’s documented format support does not guarantee every imported document. Include a reference PNG when sharing a layered file.
