Source builds
Build PhotoCraft from source — GitHub and Rust setup
Use a source build when you need development changes or want to contribute. A packaged official release is simpler for trying the editor.
Check the toolchain and target revision
The v0.7.0 Cargo.toml (opens a new tab) declares Rust 1.95 or newer. The product page’s older Rust 1.90 instruction is insufficient for this tagged source. Read the repository instructions and any toolchain configuration belonging to the revision you choose; later development changes may add requirements.
You need Git, a Rust/Cargo toolchain and the native build dependencies for your platform. Start with the official rustup installer (opens a new tab) and PhotoCraft development documentation (opens a new tab). A Windows Rust build and a macOS Rust build can require different system tools.
Decide whether you want the changing main branch or the source corresponding to an official release. Record the commit hash with your results. The commands below follow the upstream starter instructions; this guide has not compiled the application.
Clone and run the desktop application
git clone https://github.com/storytold/photocraft.git
cd photocraft
cargo run --release -p photocraftThis clones the official repository and asks Cargo to compile and run the desktop package in release mode. The first run may download dependencies and take longer than later builds. The result is a local development build, not a signed installer.
To inspect the revision and toolchain you actually used:
git rev-parse HEAD
rustc --version
cargo --versionIf you want a release tag, select it deliberately before building, for example git checkout v0.7.0 in a clean clone. Follow the documentation belonging to that tag rather than mixing old source with instructions for current development.

Diagnose the first useful error
When Cargo fails, look for the first missing tool, library or compilation error before the final summary. Record your OS, architecture, Rust version, commit and complete command. Search official issues (opens a new tab) using the key error wording.
A build failure is different from a compiled application that cannot initialize its graphics backend. If compilation finishes and the window fails to draw, keep the runtime message and read the canvas troubleshooting guide.
Do not assume source builds include every optional codec or bundled font found in official packages. Read the build-feature and font notes when comparing results. For contributing changes, use the upstream development and test instructions. For a quick first edit, return to official packaged downloads.
